Steve Jobs said that we cannot connect dots, looking forward. We can only connect them, looking back. When I was young, I imagined many things I could do with my life. But I never dreamed about becoming an expert on skin science and anti-aging. I also never imagined that one day I will become a hypnotherapist. And I never imagined that these very different fields of study will one day connect.
I graduated from the Medical University in 1996 and started my postgraduate research. As you may remember, this was the time, when Russia was going through a major transformation. The old Communist System was being rapidly replaced by a newly born capitalism and all of a sudden, the federal funding for scientific research disappeared.
This means that those of us, who wanted to keep working in the scientific laboratories, had to quickly find another source of income. This was the time, when it was not uncommon to see two janitors leaning on their brooms, deeply engaged in a discussion on quantum physics or Medieval literature or see a construction worker with delicate hands of a music professor. To me the matter of a second job was especially urgent – I had two young daughters and two dogs.
One phone call changed my life
One evening, when I was gloomily scanning job offers in the local newspaper, I got a call from my friend Elena Hernandez, who graduated from the same medical University with the same degree, three years before I did and already earned her Ph.D.
“Anna, how busy you are nowadays?’
“Well, Elena, apart from working on my Ph.D., not really.”
“How would you like a job?”
“You mean a paid one? With real money?”
Elena dreamed about starting a scientific journal dedicated to mechanisms of actions of cosmetic products and ingredients. She even had a name - The Cosmetics and Medicine Journal. Her plan was to attract leading experts in the cosmetic industry, scientists and skin doctors to contribute original articles and reviews on recent advances in cosmetic science to provide scientifically sound, practical, unbiased information to professionals.
She invited me to be science reviewer, editor and contributing author in the new journal.
Unfortunately, when we tried to find cosmetic manufacturers interested in our idea, they were not very enthusiastic. Some of them were very honest with us, “Look at this cream. It says it contains silver. I am not quite sure whether or not it actually works. There is really a very small amount of silver. But silver sounds good, doesn’t it? And there is no harm in it. It may be useful. So why not use it? People like silver. The cream is soft and pleasant. It smells nice. It makes people feel they are doing something for their skin. It can actually make their skin softer and smoother. Does silver have something to do with it? I don’t know. But people will buy a cream with silver in it. It is just a human nature. We don’t need a scientific journal to tell us what to put in our cosmetics. Nobody will read it. Nobody cares.”
Sometimes you have to follow your heart
We could just stop and give up. Instead, we started researching - studying academic papers, contacting scientists who authored the most interesting scientific articles, asking them questions. To our amazement we started discovering a fascinating world of the modern cosmetic science, apparently hidden from the Russian experts in those days.
Apparently, most experts in Russia had no idea that skin care became science. We were standing at the source of the new stream of knowledge, which could be a game changer for the Russian cosmetic industry. We were ready to open the Pandora box.
To our delight, we could see so clearly that yes, it was possible to reverse many changes associated with skin aging. Yes, it was possible to make skin look younger, healthier and more beautiful. There were biological mechanisms, which, when activated, could either slow down skin aging, or turn the clock back. There were methods and ingredients, which could activate these mechanisms. Many of them could be used in cosmetics.
By 2001, the Cosmetics and Medicine Journal revolutionized the Russian cosmetic industry, wiped most of the nonsense from cosmetic advertising, nurtured a new generation of bright, inquisitive and educated cosmetologists and established itself as the leading professional publication. In 2000, Elena and I wrote a book "The New Cosmetology", which immediately became a bestseller among Russian skin care professionals.
This is how I became a skin care expert. This wasn’t my plan. It just happened. Sometimes the Universe decides for us. As it turned out, our education was perfect for this task. All organs and systems - the immune, nervous, endocrine, immune, digestive, reproductive – affected skin, were connected to skin, received signals from skin and had their representatives in the skin. This is where our ability to think cross-disciplinary, move between fields of knowledge and find connections came up very handy.
Beyond the skin deep
In 2001 I moved to the United States of America. It was here, in the U.S., that I started studying hypnosis and NLP - initially, trying to solve my own problem, and then, to satisfy my curiosity about the powers of the unconscious mind. And once again, the same ability to think across different fields of study led me to a fascinating realization.
There is a multibillion industry that thrives on people’s desire to stay young as long as possible. We live in a fascinating time, where we have so many options available to those who intend to fight aging tooth and nail. There are cosmetic products, that promise miraculous rejuvenation, there are advanced procedures that can erase wrinkles and restore skin’s suppleness, and there are foods and dietary supplements, which can boost skin’s vitality from inside out.
And yet, there is one essential element, which most people fail to notice. Our faces reflect our inner life. All children are born with smooth, plump skin and a radiant look. Their eye bright and clear, their faces relaxed and quick to return to tranquility after any disturbance, they are naturally beautiful. And then, as we grow older, our emotions last longer, they build up and they start making deeper and deeper impression on our faces. We can say that people develop their personal mask. Crying, laughing, frowning, lip-pursing, scowling, and many more facial expressions repeated again and again, re-shape our face. Some of those masks look beautiful and some are much less attractive. Some emotions can make you look young and radiant and others age you and steal your glow.
And now I possessed tools that, as I knew from my own experience, had the power to redesign people's thinking and reshape their emotional responses.
Our thoughts and feelings show up on our face. They can change our skin’s physiology. They can delay or accelerate aging. They can dull our radiance or they can make us glow.
No amount of worry can prevent wrinkles. However, a great deal of worry will age your skin.
The Beauty Trance
From the very beginning of my career as a hypnotherapist, I couldn’t help noticing how every time my clients recalled an unpleasant memory, become angry or agitated, their faces would start looking older. The same face, after a relaxing trance, filled with positive imagery and pleasant memories, would look refreshed, rejuvenated and radiant.
If a 30-60 min hypnotic trance can have such noticeable effect, what would happen if such techniques were applied deliberately and consistently? What if we could develop a way of thinking that would effectively erase worry wrinkles, increase skin radiance and overall make skin happier, healthier and more youthful?
Today I know that we can enhance our beauty through the power of our mind. We can create this special glowing appearance that makes people so attractive regardless of their age or physical features. Your unconscious is in charge of moving the energy of your thoughts and feelings through your body. There is a reason why people describe powerful and positive emotional states as "illuminating", "radiant", "glowing", "shining," "luminous."
Your unconscious mind is in charge of the glow. You can learn to access and direct this energy.
